A New Friend
• A Purr-fect View
Jul 23, 2010 – There I was minding my own business just resting in my window seat when he rolled in. He looked a little lost at first and knowing how difficult it can be when you're the new kid on the block I decided to make him feel welcome. He was a bit shocked at first and very shy. It took some effort on my part to even get him to make eye contact.
"Psst, yes you down on the ground in the shiny new wheels…what's your name?" He was gawking all around until I told him to look up to the top floor—the black and white feline in the third window from the back. He wanted to know what a feline was. Boy, this guy was really new. I explained I was a cat—a member of the animal kingdom and a creature who walks on four paws, has whiskers and a tail versus being a human which has different body parts and walks upright on two legs.
I asked him his name and he didn't know what a name was. Maybe getting involved in this relationship was a paw in the wrong direction. Oh, well, I'm in now may as well bring him along and get this little bug educated.
After I explained the significance of a name he admitted he didn't have one. I offered to name him and he readily agreed. Hmmm…I told him I had to give this some thought because it would be something that would stay with him forever. He was very patient while I pondered this undertaking. He definitely was a cute little critter.
I knew when mom saw him she would fall in love at first sight. Okay, what does mom like. She likes to read, loves the old JAG TV series, frankly, I think she's smitten with David James Elliott who played Commander Rabb; and she loves Cape Cod. Got it!
"Hey, little bug, I have a name for you—JAG BUG; and we can call you JB for short. How does that sound? Good. Welcome to the neighborhood, JB. I'm Chaucer the feline columnist. I'm pleased to make your acquaintance." Someone was walking towards him and it looked like he had to go someplace so I told him I'd talk to him tomorrow.
"Bye Chaucer; thanks for giving me a name," he tooted as he rolled away.
"You're welcome." I can't believe this. I've got a new friend and it's a Volkswagen Beetle…to be continued.
