Open for the Summer

• A Purr-fect View

 – Oomph…puuusssh…tug, tug…push, push…one more tug and--gotcha! Whew…what a job getting my scottel (combination summer cottage/kennel) down from the shelf in the closet. I'm a little late this year because mom was very busy so I had to bide my time.

Fortunately, it's not dusty but I'll spray a little all purpose cleaner around to freshen it up. Now where to place the bed? Close to the fridge so I don't have to pad too far for a snack at night. "The box" goes in that corner and my bookshelf next to my bed. I'll need to pick up a stack of books. Let's see…TV on the back wall and my JAG DVD's and CD collection will fit on the little shelf over the TV. The wicker loveseat can face the TV and the bistro table and chairs will tuck in the corner near the door. Beach towel, sunglasses and sun hat will sit on the barn board shelf that hangs next to the door.

On to the closet…me-wow! I need to stock up on litter. Mom's going to love that because she despises hauling all those boxes up four flights. But I do my share of hauling too—bringing in the bags of food. Hey, hefting fourteen pounds is no small feat for a guy my size. But I still need paper towels, dish detergent and treats. I need treats!

What would taste good on those hot summer days? I'll make a list for the supermarket--salads, strawberry and vanilla yogurts with almonds and granola, chocolate chips even though I only dream about them, frozen pizzas, fresh veggies and fruits, pasta, lemonade, cream soda and ice cream. Looks like I'm done in here.

Okay, time to shove the scottel into the enclosed porch where I summer, because I get the breezes blowing from the open windows. Where are my photos? Oops, over on the loveseat. Family picture should go…no… no…yes, on the right side of the TV and the photo of David James Elliott in JAG uniform goes on the left. I'll hang my Monet painting over my bed.

A little outside work…beach chair hangs next to the front door over the blue hydrangea plant; tuck a few bottles of Cape Cod sand around the place, scatter a few seashells here and there and I'm ready for a nap in my new hammock. Care to join me? I just made a pitcher of lemonade.
