Jul 1, 2010 – The Yarmouth Clam Festival on July 16-18 will provide valet bicycle parking for the first time this year. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine will work with the Yarmouth Bicycle/Pedestrian Committee to provide the free service at the popular festival in downtown Yarmouth.
"Cyclists will have a safe and convenient place to leave their bikes while they enjoy the festival," said Allison Vogt, the coalition's executive director. "Those who arrive on bike will help to reduce traffic and congestion in the area, and they'll save money on gas.
Cyclists will be able to leave their bikes just off Main Street. Volunteers will staff the bike parking station on July 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., July 17 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and July 18 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The coalition has provided valet bicycle parking at the Common Ground Fair in Unity and the American Folk Festival in Bangor for the past several years. Many attendees look forward to arriving on bicycle, and they avoid traffic tie-ups.
The Yarmouth Clam Festival attracts more than 100,000 people for three days of entertainment, rides, fireworks, a parade, a road race, events such as a clam shucking contest and lots of clams and other festival treats. Admission is free. This year's featured performers include the Jason Spooner Trio, the Delta Knights and Pam Baker and the SGs.
