Windham Community Benefit 5K Walk/Run

May 4, 2010 – When two community-focused groups in Windham get together, the winners are the town residents.
For more than 45 years, the Windham Lions Club has supported community members by building handicap ramps, providing resources for many medical issues including hearing aids, vision related problems, diabetes and many other community services for worthwhile needs. In fact, the first emergency medical vehicle was provided to the town by the Lions and some members were the first members of the unit.
In October 2007 a new group was organized to provide emergency help to Windham residents experiencing a critical need for essential services, such as fuel. Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors directs their focus
to those who are in desperate need – like the disabled couple who qualified for, but hadn't yet received, fuel assistance through PROP. They were out of fuel and the Neighbors came through! Another woman had the full care of critically ill family members and because of the high cost of fuel, had used her whole PROP allotment. Her case was approved and she was so grateful, she became very emotional in thanking the Neighbors.
The need for help is not going away. The Neighbors have spent nearly $10,000 over the past year in direct assistance to local families. The Lions continue to support the need for emergency medical assistance as
well as other community needs. They recently held one of their well-known breakfasts to benefit the Windham Veterans Center!
On Oct. 31, the Lions and the Neighbors are teaming up to host the annual Windham Community Benefit 5K Walk/Run. The goal is to raise more than $15,000 with this event to benefit the community.
Many volunteers are working on this major fund-raising project. Businesses, individuals and organizations have dedicated themselves to providing help in a variety of ways. Area businesses are being contacted individually for sponsorship opportunities and potential participants in the walk/run should mark their calendar for one of the best events of the fall season.
