Another Scam

• A Heads Up from the Cumberland County Sheriff

 – The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office was recently made aware of a scam involving anonymous calls to individuals notifying them that their employees were recently arrested and needed to be bailed out of the Cumberland County Jail.

During the past couple of weeks, two individuals have arrived at the jail to bail out employees who had allegedly been arrested, only to find out that the employee had not been arrested.

The individuals received a telephone call from an anonymous person claiming that their employee had been arrested for OUI. The caller explained that he was a Bail Bondsman and in order to bail the employee out, the employer had to wire money to a local Wal-Mart store. It was later determined that the individual was never arrested.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office recommends that if you have questions on the validity of a call from an individual requesting you to bail out a third party, that you call the Cumberland County Jail and speak to someone in the Intake Division.

Maine does not have Bail Bondsmen who bail individuals out of jail. We utilize bail commissioners who come to the jail. Furthermore, the bail process does not require the wiring of money; bail commissioners take the money (cash only) directly at the jail.
