Scenes from the SONS 2010 Drill
Mar 24, 2010 – Today, March 24th marks the 21st anniversary of the Exxon Valdez accident that spilled 10.8 million gallons of crude oil off the Alaska coast. The effect to the environment was catastrophic and the cost of clean-up astronomical. Since that disaster, many steps have been taken to help avoid such spills, including the US Government requiring double hulls on oil tankers. Additionally, the methods for cleanup of such spills continue to improve.
With the US Coast Guard as the lead agency, a drill of epic proportions was conducted on the east coast, with much of the action in Portland harbor. More than 1,000 personnel from Washington DC to Maine, including 350+/- right here conducted a drill simulating a "Spill of National Significance" (SONS).
These drills are held once every three years, in the past they have been conducted in Philadelphia, Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico, and California-Mexico.
