Meet the Artist

Although she returned to full time work outside the home after her children were grown, Margaret has been weaving traditional baskets for over 20 years. She initially began teaching weaving at the kitchen table and then built a home studio, which exemplifies a true cottage industry and she's been teaching classes there for many years. Hutchins is also currently teaching at Windham Adult Ed.

She has designed a series of her own original wrought iron handles which are hand forged locally and fit several standard basket patterns. In addition to some retail basket sales at shows and handles to other weavers, Margaret also wholesale markets the handles to other basket supply distributers.

For her Hearth Basket, she was awarded the distinction by the Colby College Museum of Art as a participating weaver in the 1989-91 international tour entitled Maine Basketry Past to Present The Hearth Basket is a beautiful basket in a traditional, simple pattern.

Hutchins was a participant in the QVC America's Best 50/50 tour in the fall of 1995, where the premier crafters of each state were juried and selected for national telemarketing. Her company, the Woven Reed, now enjoys a national and international following due to the success of her original Wood Bottom Pie Carrier.

Anyone interested in lessons or purchasing her creations can contact Margaret via e-mail at wovenreed1@yahoo.com
